How to Wear a Tie Clip: Placement, Rules & Style Tips

The tie clip is the rare accessory that's both practical and sharp: it keeps your tie from swinging into your soup, and it adds a line of polish across your chest. It's also frequently worn wrong. Here are the rules, in two minutes.

Where exactly does a tie clip go?

Between the third and fourth buttons of your dress shirt — roughly at the sternum. Higher looks nervous; lower disappears under a buttoned jacket. Clip it to both blades of the tie and the shirt placket: the whole point is anchoring the tie to your body, and a clip attached only to the tie is decoration doing no work.

The width rule

A tie clip should span about three-quarters of your tie's width — never wider than the tie itself. On a standard 7.5–8 cm Talisman tie, that means a 5–6 cm clip. Wider than the tie is the single most noticed tie-clip mistake.

Angle and orientation

Straight and horizontal. A slight, deliberate angle can read as rakish, but if you're not sure, level it — crooked reads as accidental. Position it so it sits just above the buttoning point of your jacket when you wear one, so it peeks out rather than hiding.

When to wear one (and when not)

• Wear it: at work, interviews (it signals attention to detail), weddings, and any day you'll be moving — leaning over desks, dancing, carrying things.
• Skip it: with a waistcoat or cardigan (the garment already holds the tie), and with a bow tie — there's nothing to clip.

Metal matching, simplified

Match your metals loosely: silver clip with silver watch and belt buckle, gold with gold. Silver is the universal default and suits every tie color. Patterned or colorful ties want a plain clip; a plain dark tie can carry a more decorative one.
