How to Fold a Pocket Square: 6 Folds Every Man Should Know

A pocket square is the highest style-per-dollar accessory in menswear: a few square inches of fabric that make a jacket look finished. The fold you choose sets the tone — crisp and formal, or soft and relaxed. Here are the six folds worth knowing, from easiest up.

1. The Presidential (flat) fold — 60 seconds, maximum formality

Fold the square into a rectangle that fits your pocket; show a straight quarter-inch band of fabric. That's it. White linen or cotton, presidential fold, is correct at every formal event on earth — job interviews included.

2. The One-Point fold

Fold the square diagonally into a triangle, tuck so a single peak shows. Slightly more expressive than the flat fold, still office-safe.

3. The Two-Point fold

Same as the one-point, but offset the corners before folding so two peaks show. A favorite at weddings — structured but decorative.

4. The Puff

Pinch the center of the square, let the corners fall, fold the tails under, and place it corner-down in the pocket. Soft, relaxed, ideal for silky and satin squares where the fabric's drape does the work. The go-to with patterned squares.

5. The Reverse Puff

A puff turned upside down — corners fanning upward like petals. Maximum flourish; best at celebrations and with solid jackets that let it shine.

6. The Winged Puff

A puff with the side corners folded in for a rounded dome. The dressiest of the soft folds — black tie optional territory.

Matching your square to your tie

The one rule: coordinate, never duplicate. An identical tie-and-square fabric reads as a boxed set; instead, pull one secondary color from your tie's pattern into the square, or pair a patterned tie with a solid square in a matching undertone. Our tie set guide shows the full composition logic, and the color psychology guide helps you choose the accent.

Pocket square FAQ

Which fold for a job interview?

Presidential fold, white square. Understated wins — same principle as our interview tie advice.

Does the pocket square have to match my tie?

No — it has to talk to your tie. Shared undertone, different pattern scale.

Can I wear a pocket square without a tie?

Yes — it's the easiest way to dress up an open-collar jacket. Use a puff fold to keep it relaxed.
